西南大学网络与继续教育学院课程考试试题卷类别:网教 专业:应用英语 / 英语教育 课程名称【编号】:综合英语二【0086】 A 卷大作业 满分:100 分I. Reading Comprehension (30 points, 2 points each)Directions: There are 3 passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinishedstatements. For each of them there are four choices marked A. B. C. and D. You should decide on the bestchoice.Passage One There is a popular belief among parents that schools are no longer interested in spelling. No school I havetaught in has ever ignored spelling or considered it unimportant as a basic skill. There are, however, vastlydifferent ideas about how to teach it, or how much priority it must be given over general languagedevelopment and writing ability. The problem is, how to encourage a child to express himself freely andconfidently in writing without holding him back with the complexities of spelling? If spelling becomes the only focal point of his teacher’s interest, clearly a bright child will be likely to“play safe”. He will tend to write only words within his spelling range, choosing to avoid adventurouslanguage. That’s why teachers often encourage the early use of dictionaries and pay attention to content ratherthan technical ability. I was once shocked to read on the bottom of a sensitive piece of writing about a personal experience:“This work is terrible! There are far too many spelling errors and your writing is illegible.” It may have been asharp criticism of the pupil’s technical abilities in writing, but it was also a sad reflection on the teacher whohad omitted to read the essay, which contained some beautiful expressions of the child’s deep feelings. Theteacher was not wrong to draw attention to the errors, but if his priorities had centered on the child’s ideas, anexpression of his disappointment with the presentation would have given the pupil more motivation to seekimprovement. 1. Teachers differ in their opinions about __________. A. the difficulties in teaching spelling B. the role of spelling in general language development C. the complexities of the basic writing skillsD. the necessity of teaching spelling2. The expression “play safe” in Paragraph 2 probably means “__________”.A. to write carefullyB. to do as teachers sayC. to use dictionaries frequentlyD. to avoid using words one is not sure of3. Teachers encourage the use of dictionaries so that __________.A. students will be able to express their ideas more freelyB. teacher will have less trouble in correcting mistakesC. students will have more confidence in writingD. students will learn to be independent of teachers4. The writer seems to think that the teacher’s judgement on that sensitive piece of writing is __________.A. reasonable B. unfair C. foolish D. careless5. The major point discussed in the passage is __________. A. the importance of developing writing skillsB. the complexities of spelling C. the correct way of marking compositions D. the relationship between spelling and the content of a composition Passage Two Today, as in every other day of the year, more than 3,000 American adolescents will smoke their firstcigarette on their way to becoming regular smokers as adults. During their lifetime, it can be expected that ofthese 3,000 about 23 will be murdered, 30 will die in traffic accidents, and nearly 750 will be killed by asmoking-related disease. The number of deaths attributed to cigarette smoking outweighs all other factors, whether voluntary or involuntary, as a cause of death. Since the late 1970s, when daily smoking among high school seniors reached 30 percent, smoking ratesamong youth have declined. While the decline is impressive, several important issues must be raised.First, in the past several years, smoking rates among youth have declined very little. Second, in the late1970s, smoking among male high school seniors exceeded that among female by nearly 10 percent. Thestatistic is reversing. Third, several recent studies have indicated high school dropouts have excessively highsmoking rates, as much as 75 percent. Finally, though significant declines in adolescent smoking have occurred in the past decade, no definitereasons for the decline exist. Within this context, the National Cancer Institute (NCI) began its current effort todetermine the most effective measures to reduce smoking levels among youth.6. According to the author, the deaths among youth are mainly caused by ________.A. traffic accidents B. smoking-related diseaseC. murder D. all of these7.Every day there are over ________ high school students who will become regular smokers.A. 75 B. 23- 1 - C. 30 D. 3,0008. By “dropout” the author means ________.A. students who failed the examination B. students who left schoolC. students who lost their way D. students who were driven out of school9. The reason for declining adolescent smoking is that ________.A. NCI has taken effective measuresB. smoking is prevented among high school seniorsC. there are many smokers who have died of cancerD. none of these10. What is implied but not stated by the author is that ________.A. smoking rates among youth have declined very littleB. there are now more female than male smokers among high school seniorsC. high smoking rates are due to the increase of wealthD. smokers in high school are from lower socioeconomic backgroundPassage ThreeThere is a certain inevitability that e-book sales have now overtaken paperback sales on Amazon’s USsite. Amazon’s Kindle 2 is so light and so cheap that it’s easy to see why people have rushed to buy it. ThoughI’m still not keen on the design of the Kindle, it is a vast improvement on its predecessor and certainlytolerable. Beyond the device itself, Amazon has done a great job of rolling out Kindle apps, ensuring thatpeople like me - who have an iPad but not a Kindle - can still join in the fun. Once you’re into the Kindleecosystem, Amazon locks you in tightly - just as Apple does with its iTunes / iPod ecosystem. It’s so easy tobuy from Amazon’s store and the books are so cheap that it’s not worth the effort of going elsewhere. While I remain opposed to Amazon’s DRM (Digital Rights Management)-indeed, I’m opposed to DRMon any e-books - I have to admit that the implementation is so smooth that most Kindle users won’t care atall that their e-books can’t be moved to other devices. The e-book trend is nowhere near peaking. Over the next five years we can expect to see more and morereaders move away from printed books and pick up e-books instead. But I don’t think that will mean the deathof the printed book. There are some who prefer printed books. They like having shelves filled with books they’ve read andbooks they plan to read; they like the feel of the book in their hands and the different weights and typefacesand layouts of different titles. In other words, they like the physical form of the book almost as much as thewords it contains.I can sympathise with those people. As I wrote earlier this week, my ideal situation would be forpublishers to bundle e-books with printed ones - in much the same way that film studios bundle DVDs withdigital copies of films. There’s no reason to think that lovers of printed books will change their minds. Therewill undoubtedly be fewer of them as time goes by because more people will grow up with e-books and spendlittle time with printed ones. However, just as there are people who love vinyl records, even if they were bornwell into the CD era, there will still be a dedicated minority who love physical books.Since there are fewer of these people, that will mean fewer bookshops and higher prices for printed booksbut I don’t think the picture is entirely bleak. There is scope for smaller print runs of lavishly designed printedbooks and bookshops aimed at book lovers, rather than the Stieg Larsson-reading masses. With mainstreamreaders out of the printed book market, book lovers might even find they get a better experience.11. Wet can infer from Paragraph 1 that __________. A. most people buy Kindle 2 mainly because of its low price B. the author of the passage is a loyal customer of Apple products C. Amazon’s Kindle 2 surpassed Kindle 1 in designing D. the sales of e-books outnumbered those of paperbacks in the U. S.12. According to the passage, the reason why the author opposes to Amazon’s DRM is that __________. A. e-books can only be purchased on Amazon. com B. Kindle books are not compatible with other electronic reading devices C. once implemented, e-books can’t be transferred to other equipments D. e-books installed on Kindle 2 can’t be edited freely13. It can be learned that the trend of e-books __________. A. will come to stop any time soon B. will reach the summit in the near future C. will meet its heyday when printed books die D. has already reached its peak14. The author believes that the surging sales of e-books won’t mean the death of printed books because__________. A. a minority will stick to their love of printed books B. the majority of book lovers won’t change their minds C. people always hold nostalgic feelings towards printed books D. people will return to printed books as time goes by15. According to the author, which of the following is TRUE about the future of printed books? A. They will be bundled with e-books. B. They will no longer be available in the market. C. They will be sold in small quantity and high quality.D. They will be redesigned to cater to the masses.II.
