It has been argued that the supply of第 2 页 (共 11 页)
good land is limited. To feed a large population, inferior land must be cultivatedand the good land worked intensively. Thus, each person produces less and thismeans a lower average income than could be obtained with a smallerpopulation. Other economists have argued that a large population gives morescope for specialization and the development of facilities such as ports, roadsand railways, which are not likely to be built unless there is a big demand tojustify them. One of the difficulties in carrying out a worldwide birth control program liesin the fact that official attitudes to population growth vary from country tocountry depending on the level of industrial development and the availability offood and raw materials. In a developing country where a vastly expandedpopulation is pressing hard upon the limits of food, space and natural resources,it will be the first concern of government to place a limit on the birthrate, whatever the consequences may be. In a highly industrialized society theproblem may be more complex. A decreasing birthrate may lead tounemployment because it results in a declining market for manufactured goods. When the pressure of population on housing declines, prices also decline andthe building industry is weakened. Faced with considerations such as these, thegovernment of a developed country may well prefer to see a slowly increasingpopulation, rather than one which is stable or in decline.6. A slowly decreasing population.答案:C解析:全文最后一句的意思。10. Why is it difficult to carry out a worldwide birth control program? A. Because it will do harm to the national economy in most countries.B. Passage 3Ever since Stephanie’s 13th birthday we have been receiving commentsfrom other adults expressing their sympathies because our daughter is now ateenager. We’ve heard everything from, “ Sure she’s a good kid, but just wait, now that she’s a teenager ...” to the ever inspiring, “well, all kids are rottenwhen they are teenagers, just try to go through it the best way you can.” What’smore upsetting is that many of these insensitive adults feel the need to sharetheir negative predictions well within the hearing of both our daughters. I know that teenagers can be moody and difficult at times, but I’m 32 and Ican also be difficult and moody. We worry about the future and want today’skids to know that we care for them and that there are opportunities that awaitthem. However, at the very point they set out on that journey toward adulthoodwe stand there watching them disapprovingly, just waiting for them to make amistake, “just like we knew they would.” We tell them to respect themselvesand to say no to drugs, yet we fail to set a positive example by treating themwith kindness and consideration, demonstrating our respect for them. I have, at times, been guilty of this behavior but am now realizing that themore I see each person as a person, the more I am pleasantly surprised in someway or another. For example, a few weeks ago my husband and I were havingdinner at our favorite restaurant and two teenage boys came in and sat downright beside us. I must admit that my first thought was, “Perfect, there goes ourquiet, peaceful dinner.” I was so wrong! These young men were well behaved, quiet, and left a nice tip for the waitress. Once I looked beyond the jeans soloose they were practically falling off and the multi-colored hair, I saw whatfine people these kids were. Many of the people who, perhaps unknowingly, treat teens with disrespect areunhappy about the fact that pop singers and sports stars are our children’sheroes. I feel that unless we give them something better to go after, we reallyshouldn’t complain.16.
